The speciality of gastroenterology and hepatology cares for patients with both benign and malignant disorders of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract and liver. The speciality encompasses a wide range of conditions – from common disorders, such as indigestion and irritable bowel syndrome, to highly complex problems, such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and liver failure. Gastroenterologists also see patients with a variety of general medical problems, such as anaemia and weight loss.

Students will shadow a Nurse Specialist in order to gain a general awareness of the Gastroenterology department and the services it provides both within the hospital and in the community.
The post will be mainly observational, with limited practical tasks. These may include:
•Accompanying a Nurse Specialist in their day to day duties
•Observation of clinics
•Some administration tasks - filing, faxing, taking notes,
•Limited interaction with patients;

Students may be prohibited from attending some areas / clinics due to the nature of the service and unsuitability for a young person.
