Aspiring medics join forces with Team ULHT

Sixth form students from across the county who are interested in careers in medicine, took part in the 15th Aspiring Medics Programme, delivered by United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust (ULHT) in conjunction with the Lincolnshire Talent Academy.
A total of 16 young people attended the three-and-a-half day programme based at Lincoln County Hospital towards the end of April, providing a valuable insight into what life is like for a 21st century junior doctor in the NHS.
The comprehensive programme gives students the opportunity to shadow junior doctors, visit theatres, try out some basic clinical tasks and also hone their interview techniques to stand them in good stead, ready to make their UCAS applications for medical school.
Julie Evans, Undergraduate Medical Education Centre Manager for ULHT said:
“The programme is now in its 10th year and continues to go from strength-to-strength with fantastic feedback from students. We’re pleased to be able to support our future medics and hope they will return to Lincolnshire once qualified.”
Seventeen-year-old Charlie Rogers, who goes to Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School in Horncastle, said the highlight for him was definitely the opportunity to shadow a junior doctor in action.
“It was brilliant, I got the chance to take part in some basic procedures, use a stethoscope, observe endoscopy and colonoscopy and take some bloods – just the basics but it was really helpful. It gave me a real insight into what the future could be like for me.” he said.
Katie Choi (17), who currently attends The Priory Academy LSST in Lincoln said she found the academic sections most valuable:
“I’d already done some shadowing in the past organised by the Lincolnshire Talent Academy, so I found working on the personal statements and learning more about the application process was really beneficial this time around.”
Claire Flavell, Strategic Lead for the Lincolnshire Talent Academy added:
“With a national shortage of medics across the country, it’s vital we continue to raise the profile of the profession and to support our young people in their development. The opening of the Lincolnshire Medical School in 2019 is wonderful news for the county, and we will continue to work with our local schools to engage our talented students to consider Lincolnshire as their place of study and future career.”
The next Aspiring Medics Programme will be taking place on 29 May and is also fully booked. However, the Lincolnshire Talent Academy are currently developing further experience opportunities for 2018, details of which will be promoted via the website.
